We followed the fire line, into and through the fires of the burning desert. Fire and smoke were all around us. A billion or so dollars might have been spent to put the fires out in this largely unpopulated desert, perhaps that much again every year from now on. Octavia Butler writes “In order to rise from its own ashes, a Phoenix first must burn.”Moten and Harney write, “The earth moves against the world. And today the response of theworld is clear. The world answers in fire and flood. The more the earth churns the more vicious the world’s response.” We shall soon put these two hypotheses to the test.
